Control solution

Blood glucose control solution is a specially formulated liquid used to check whether a compatible glucose meter and its test strips are functioning as expected.

Rather than using a blood sample, users apply the solution to a test strip and compare the resulting measurement with the acceptable range provided by the manufacturer.

Control solution can be useful when opening new test strip containers, troubleshooting unexpected readings, or verifying a glucose testing system.

Using the correct control solution helps support reliable blood glucose monitoring.

Standard, level 1, level 2 and twin-pack glucose control solutions with close-up views.

What a control check tells you

  • A check without blood

A control solution check tests the meter and test strips together without using blood.

  • Understanding the range

The result is compared with the control range specified for the system; that range is not a personal blood glucose target.

  • Use the right solution

Use the solution intended for your meter and follow its instructions for performing the check.

When to check the system

  • When checks may be needed

The manufacturer may recommend a control check when opening a new strip container, after dropping the meter or when a result seems unusual.

  • Storage and expiration

Check the solution label for storage and expiration instructions.

  • Results outside the range

If a control result falls outside the stated range, follow the troubleshooting guidance or contact the manufacturer.
